Join us in congratulating Jaune Quick-to-See Smith, recipient of the 2023 Artist Award, at our online program tomorrow, February 1 at 4 pm PT (7 pm ET). The program includes a 90 minute conversation with Smith and Squeak Carnwath. Afterwards, raise a glass with us in celebration of Smith’s ongoing contributions to art. RSVP with the link in bio.

The 2023 jury panel consisted of three artists: Brenda Goodman, Lewis deSoto, and Juan Sánchez.

Join us this Saturday, January 27 at 11 am PT on Zoom for a gathering of the Legacy Discussion Group. This free group welcomes artists, family members, studio managers, and anyone interested in learning more about long-term planning for artists.

On Saturday, we will be looking at chronologies, and the ways artists can contextualize their work, life, and influences in meaningful ways. For those who have never compiled a chronology, we will also explore places to find and gather information that might help scholars and the general public understand more about the artist’s lived experiences.

Smith and Squeak Carnwath, artist and co-founder of Artists’ Legacy Foundation, will engage in a dialogue about Smith’s art, life, and ongoing advocacy and support for other artists.

2023 Artist Award juror Juan Sánchez says, “Her art cuts through complexity and lies of colonialism, the governmental oppression of native peoples and the destruction of our natural environment. With that visual intensity her art also embraces, celebrates, inspires, and elevates life. She is a generous spirit who has influenced generations of artists, me included. She is worthy of the Artist Award, and I am cheerfully celebrating.”

The Artists’ Legacy Foundation is pleased to ann

The Artists’ Legacy Foundation is pleased to announce Jaune Quick-to-See Smith (b. 1940, citizen of the Confederated Salish and Kootenai Nation) as the recipient of the 2023 Artist Award. Smith’s paintings, works on paper, and sculptures offer poignant and meaningful perspectives on contemporary social issues, politics, and the environment, and critically examine representations of Native Americans in pop culture and art.

We are grateful for the service of our 2023 Artist Award jury, which consisted of three artists: Brenda Goodman (@brengoodman ), Lewis deSoto (@lewisdesoto ), and Juan Sánchez (@guaninsanchez2023 ).

Jaune Quick-to-See Smith (@jaunequicktoseesmith ) says, “I am so honored to be selected by such a prestigious group of peers--I have followed each of them, I have their work memorized in my head. I know how brilliant they are, which makes this so way over the top for me.”
